Golf Club Types
Seeing the amount of money that world famous golf players like Tiger Woods are earning, and with a dream to strike it rich one day, more and more people are opting in for playing golf. This sport is richly steeped in tradition, is challenging and at the same time relaxing too. As a new comer to this sport it is vital to know about the different types of clubs used in the game. A proper golf club can make all the difference between success and failure on the course. Here are some details about the different types of clubs one comes across on the golf course.
Drivers: This club is the first one you will use when you begin your game and are ready to tee off. This club boasts of a full head and has a long shaft and is used to strike the ball off the tee. The club heads are available in few different sizes including the oversized one.
Fairway Woods: These clubs are similar to the drivers with the difference being that they provide different types of trajectories (also referred to as `loft’). The term trajectory refers to the height the ball traverses. Made out of metal, the term `wood’ has stuck from the old days when clubs were manufactured from wood. These clubs come in different types, numbered 2 to 9. The higher the number, the higher the trajectory it provides. Do not forget that the higher the trajectory the lower the distance covered by the ball.
Irons: These are the most popular of golf clubs and are used for playing the maximum number of shots. They are used when one wants to hit the ball off the ground for covering medium range distances like 125 to 225 yards. These clubs too have numbers assigned to them. The higher the number of the club used, the higher the loft of the ball… the lower the number of the club used, the greater the distance covered by the ball.
Wedges: These are termed as utility clubs and are used for short and controlled shots like clearing an obstacle like a tree. There are different types of such clubs like the lob wedge, sand wedge, and the pitching wedge. As its name suggests, the sand wedge is used to get the ball that is trapped in a sand bunker.
Putters: The club is used for one of the toughest golf shots… putting the ball in the hole. These clubs are available in different types like mallet putters, conventional putters, and belly putters. These clubs also come with electronic accessories like laser guidance systems which help to make the shot extremely accurate.
